The Arcade Graveyard: Ghoulishly We Play

Afterburner 2, Galaxy Force 2

These two titles are basically the same style game.  Take your jet in Afterburner 2 or spacecraft in Galaxy Force 2 (with no Galaxy Force 1?) into a level and shoot down lots of enemies with your machine gun or your lock-on missiles.  Afterburner lets you blow through levels and you get one-hit-one-kill with your enemies.  Galaxy Force 2 has energy/shield level that allows you to play until you hit zero.  Hit zero and it's game over.  They're both definitely enjoyable and have their own unique style.  They do suffer from ambition, however.  Both games try to throw so much at you that it's easy to get lost in the battle, and you're left wondering what to do next.  This is more an observation or a constructive criticism rather than a complaint on my part.  I enjoy playing both titles.
